Area Pigneto
Located almost between the vertices of the triangle formed by Porta Maggiore, largo Preneste, and Marranella Square, the Pigneto is an urban area in the Municipality of Rome V. The main street is the eponymous Via del Pigneto, along which there is now a concentration of bars, pubs, and literary cafes. The urban conglomerate is relatively recent: it was only after 1870 that a real settlement developed in the area. A young but actively anti-fascist neighborhood, the Pigneto was hit by Allied bombings in 1943 and 1944. In the post-war period, due to its predominantly working-class social composition, the Pigneto was chosen by numerous directors of Neorealism cinema as the setting for their films. Luchino Visconti's "Bellissima," Dino Risi's "A Difficult Life," and Pier Paolo Pasolini's "Accattone" were all filmed on the streets of the Pigneto. We particularly remember the pivotal scene in Roberto Rossellini's "Rome, Open City": the execution of Pina, played by Anna Magnani and killed by the Nazis, was filmed on Via Raimondo Montecuccoli. To stay on the subject of cinema, let's change the tone and highlight that the legendary accountant Fantozzi, the star of Luciano Salce's films and played by Paolo Villaggio, actually lives in the Pigneto with his wife Pina and daughter Mariangela! In total, fifteen films have been shot here, in this small triangle nestled between the Labicano-Prenestino and Tiburtino neighborhoods.
