Oristano Airport - Fenosu
The airfield historical origins started in 1942 when an air strip was built for military purposes. Once that initial function ended, the airfield was abandoned for a long time. In the Seventies the Oristano Aero Club started to operate and became a renowned centre and a regional school for sport parachuting. Just because of its presence, in the year 1981 a Ministry of Transport Decree declared the the airstrip reopened to civilian air traffic, only limited to local Aero Club sport and tourist activities
In the 1992 the Civil Aviation Authority shared the airport management between the Aeroclub and the Oristano Industrial Consortium; the basic structures were then built by the Oristano Province Administration. In 1997 the airport operator SOGEAOR was established in order to complete the basic structures and give the airport the proper instrumental equipments for an operational use. After several years spent in works, the airport was eventually opened to general air traffic in 2005 in ICAO category 1B. No commercial traffic however was allowed. Further recent works on the runways in 2006 allowed to declare the new category 2C still for general aviation only.
