points of interest in Narni
Narni Sotterranea
Umbria, a region in the green heart of Italy, is known not only for it’s many monuments, or historical hillside villages, but also for its underground secrets.
This mysterious world can be found in Narni, where in 1979 six boys discovered an underground complex of rooms of the Ex Convent of Santa Maria Maggiore built by the Dominican friars. This discovery brought to light rooms rich in history and emotion where you can travel back in time when the Romans used to preserve the water that flowed along the winding acqueducts in underground cisterns, and when the Longobards used to build underground decorated chapels. And finally enter the holy court of Inquisition and remain breathless viewing the cells of the prisoners. One of these cells preserves the graffiti etched by a mysterious prisoner who left us a lot of symbol to decipher. You can discover this and much more at Narni Underground during the guided tours suitable for adults and children at fixed times depending on the time of the year. Please note that sufferers of claustrophobia will find Narni underground easily accessible.
